RESEARCH POSITIONS
IN SYSTEMS NEUROSCIENCE
The Institute for Medicine at the Research Centre Juelich (Germany)
invites applications for the following research positions:
1 Postdoc (BAT IIa)
2 PhD students (BAT IIa/2)
All three positions are available for 3 years, with immediate start,
in the newly established Cellular Neurobiology Group (head: Dr.
Andreas K. Engel) located at the Institute for Medicine. Main
research interests of the group are the dynamics of distributed
sensory representations, intermodal and sensorimotor integration, and
computational theories of perception and consciousness. Current
projects involve a combination of in-vivo animal physiology and
EEG/imaging experiments in humans. The lab is equipped for in-vivo
multielectrode recordings in rats and mice (in both anesthetized and
behavioural preparations), as well as for high-density EEG recordings
(64 Chn) in humans. The group is currently interested in comparative
studies of neuronal synchronisation between cortical and subcortical
structures, in the role of synchrony for sensorimotor
transformations, in functional links between synchrony and perceptual
states, in cross-species comparisons of synchronisation phenomena,
and in the study of synchronisation mechanisms (recordings in
transgenic mice). Furthermore, the group focusses on the
pathophysiological relevance of synchronization phenomena and is
involved in cooperative research with clinical groups.
The postdoctoral position is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation
(Hannover, Germany). The successful applicant will study neuronal
interactions underlying multi-modal integration in both anesthetized
and behaving rats. Applicants should have a background in medicine or
biology, and 1-2 years postdoctoral experience in animal
neurophysiology. The position is available for 3 years. Salary is
according to BAT (IIa).
The two PhD positions are part of different projects. Position 1 will
be devoted to the study of neuronal interactions in sensory areas in
transgenic and wildtype mice. Applicants should have a background in
medicine or biology. The successful applicant for position 2 will
perform EEG studies in humans that address the role of integrative
mechanisms in perception and memory tasks, with specific focus on the
role of induced high-frequency activity. Applicants should have a
background in medicine, biology, psychology or physics. Salary for
both PhD positions is according to BAT (IIa/2).

Applicants are asked to submit their CV, bibliography and a short
statement describing their research interests. For the postdoc
position, applications mentioning the reference code "067/2001"
should be directed to Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH, PR - PB, 52425
Juelich, Germany. Applications for the PhD positions should be
submitted to Dr. Andreas K. Engel, Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH,
Institut fuer Medizin, 52425 Juelich, Germany.
