    Department of Optometry & Neuroscience
University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology

    Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Applications are invited for a three-year appointment as a
post-doctoral research fellow to work on a Wellcome-Trust project
entitled "Human colour-vision deficiency in relation to the spectral
and spatial structure of natural scenes". Experiments will entail
psychophysical measurements with colour-deficient observers and
analysis of natural scenes. The project is part of an established
research programme in visual psychophysics involving a team of about
six members working in several excellently equipped laboratories with
a range of computational and optical display-system techniques. The
project will involve collaboration with colleagues in Portugal.

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent and have experience of
research in colour vision and visual psychophysics, but those with
training in computing science, physics, engineering, optometry,
experimental psychology, and allied disciplines are encouraged to
apply. Familiarity with C or Matlab and PC graphics software would
    be an advantage.

The appointment, available from 1 December 2001 or as soon as
possible thereafter, will be on the University Research RA1A scale at
    point 6 to 12 (£19,486 - £25,203 p.a.).

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor David Foster, Tel: +44
    161 200 3888, E-mail: d.h.foster@umist.ac.uk. Information about the
department is available at http://www.op.umist.ac.uk. Applicants
should send a Curriculum Vitae for the attention of Professor David
Foster, Department of Optometry and Neuroscience, UMIST, Sackville
Street, Manchester, M60 1QD, UK. Closing date for applications:
