    The Horsager Lab at the Institute for Genetic Medicine at the University
of Southern California is a new lab focused on developing gene therapies for
photoreceptor diseases. This work involves two components: 1) developing
therapeutic vectors targeted to specific retinal cell types and 2)
evaluating the restored visual efficacy using physiological and behavioral
techniques. Our lab is currently evaluating the use of light-sensitive
proteins such as channelrhodopsin-2 and halorhodopsin to restore visual
function in the absence of photoreceptors (e.g., retinitis pigmentosa). The
project will be conducted in close collaboration with Eos Neuroscience,
Inc., a commercial partner. We are currently looking to fill the following
position:



Postdoctoral Fellow (Molecular Biology) – An important aim of the lab is to
develop molecular tools to improve cell-specific expression of our
therapeutic genes (i.e., promoter or regulatory sequences). This work will
be conducted in collaboration with a computational biologist here at USC.
The ideal candidate will possess a terminal degree (Ph.D. / M.D.), with
experience in molecular biology, virology, and/or neuroscience.  The
candidate should have experience in subcloning DNA constructs, virus
production/purification, and transfecting and maintaining cell cultures.
Additionally, a part of this project involves gene expression profiling of
specific populations of cells. Therefore, familiarity with isolation of
specific populations of cells, FACs sorting, and analyses such as SAGE or
CAGE is highly desirable.
