The Department of Psychology seeks a talented and enthusiastic researcher
and teacher for a continuing appointment in the area of the biological basis
of behaviour. The principal need is to ensure that students undertaking
degrees in psychology are provided with a contemporary coverage of evidence
based learning in the biological basis of behaviour. The Department
currently offers two courses in the area, one at the second year level
(PSYC2007) and the other at third year (PSYC3016) - these courses must
continue to be offered but there is scope for further development within
their existing structures. The conduct of a strong and internationally
recognized research program is an essential feature of the position.
Supervision of the research of both honours and PhD students in the
Department of Psychology forms an important part of this requirement.
Excellent opportunities are available for collaborative work with other
parts of the ANU, including the Research School of Biology, the John Curtin
School of Medical Research, and the Centre for Mental Health Research.

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The position exists in order to ensure appropriate educational coverage of
the biological basis of behaviour for students undertaking degrees in
psychology. While this is a self-evidently essential component in any sound
educational program in psychology it is also a requirement of the external
accrediting agency for psychology programs in Australia.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:

Position Dimension & Relationships:

The position is integral to the broad educational operation of the
Department of Psychology. Education in the biological basis of behaviour
forms an essential part of the undergraduate program and is very clearly
linked to other parts of the educational program. The scope for strong
research collaborations between the appointee and a significant number of
other staff currently working in the Department is quite considerable. There
is, in addition, a very strong possibility for close and productive links
with other areas of the University including the Research School of Biology,
the John Curtin School of Medical Research, and the Centre for Mental Health
Research.

Role Statement:

The appointee will be expected to:

1. Undertake original research of high quality in psychology, and
attract external competitive grant funding to support that research;

2. Maintain a significant profile of published work in refereed
journals of high international standing, and report the results of research
at appropriate national and international conferences;

3. Develop, convene and deliver high quality courses in the biological
basis of behaviour to undergraduate psychology students (the courses
currently offered in this area, which must continue to be offered, are
PSYC2007 - Biological Basis of Behaviour, and PSYC3016 - Issues in
Behavioural Neuroscience);

4. Supervise the independent research of students in the Department of
Psychology enrolled in the honours (fourth) year and in postgraduate
research degrees;

5. Maintain the development of innovative and contemporary course
material in the biological basis of behaviour at the psychology
undergraduate level;

6. Attend departmental meetings and assume roles on both department and
ANU committees as appropriate; and

7. Undertake other duties from time to time as directed by the Head of
Department.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

A.  Qualifications

1. A PhD degree in an area relevant to the biological basis of
behaviour

B.  Experience

1.	A demonstrated ability to carry out independent and original
research in psychology, as demonstrated by a body of published work of
international standing
2.	An ability to attract external competitive research grant funding
3.	Ability to deliver high quality courses in teaching biological basis
of behaviour to undergraduate students in psychology
4.	Ability and capacity to offer supervision to fourth year (honours)
and postgraduate (research PhD and masters) students in the Department of
Psychology
5.	Experience in developing course material and assessment in
psychology
6.	An ability to become effectively involved in academic administration

C.  Attributes

1.	Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated
ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues in
an academic environment
2.	A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and
policies, and a commitment to their application in a university context
