PhD Position in medical image processing and information retrieval,
University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO)
Applications are invited for a position as a PhD candidate in the
medGIFT group at the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland
(HES-SO), Sierre. The successful applicant will join a team of
researchers working on algorithms, data structures and representations
of medical knowledge using structured and unstructured textual data as
well as multidimensional and multimodal images. The analysis of images
and particularly multidimensional images will be carried out with the
goal to allow for a retrieval of the data by textual and visual means.
The goal is to build a full image retrieval system for clinical use by
radiologists in collaboration with 11 other European partners in the
project. The results are planned to be included into innovative user
interfaces to deliver information to the clinicians in the Geneva
University Hospitals. A close collaboration with the Geneva University
Hospitals and the University of Geneva is foreseen throughout the project.
The candidate is expected to have a Masters/Diploma degree in computer
science, mathematics or a closely related field, and to have knowledge
in image or signal processing, in machine learning and information
retrieval.
The expertise and experience of the ideal applicant should fit the
following profile in decreasing order of importance:
• biomedical informatics;
• multimedia indexing;
• information retrieval;
• machine learning;
• image processing;
• artificial intelligence;
• computer vision;
Experience in software development using Java and web programming (HTML,
JavaScript, Flex, PHP, MySQL) is desirable. Applications should include
a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae, and names and addresses of

LANGUAGE:
Good knowledge of either French or English is mandatory. French is the
spoken language in Sierre so some knowledge of French is beneficial. The
candidate should be willing to learn some French.

have been granted allowing a close collaboration in a team on related topics
• The offices are located in the heart of the canton of Valais and the
high Swiss Alps, minutes from ski resorts such as Crans Montana
• The location is very central in Europe:
Traveling by train to Milano 2.5 hrs, Geneva 2 hrs, and Zurich 2.5 hrs.
SALARY:
Switzerland is a relatively expensive place, but the salary of a PhD
student permits to cover all living costs easily. Finding a flat in
Sierre or the environments is not hard and the quality of life is very high.
DURATION:
The position is expected to start in September 2010, or as soon as
possible afterwards.
Salary is guaranteed for 4 years in the context of a large EU FP7 project.
