Postdoctoral research assistant in fMRI and computational modelling
Measurement and modelling of centre and surround mechanisms in human
visual cortex
Applications are invited for a Wellcome Trust funded postdoctoral
position to work with Dr Jonas Larsson on a project to study mechanisms
of centre-surround modulation in human visual cortex using functional
magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The project will apply recently
developed methods for estimating visual response fields with fMRI to
study the spatiotemporal organisation of centre and surround mechanisms
across human visual areas. The experiments will be carried out using the
research-dedicated 3T scanner at the Department of Psychology, in
combination with computational modelling and psychophysics. The project
may also draw on a range of other techniques available in the
department, such as state-of-the-art eye tracking, TMS, and EEG. The
variety and level of techniques used makes this an excellent training
opportunity for a well motivated candidate.
Candidates should hold a PhD in neuroscience or a related discipline,
e.g. physiology, computer science, engineering, or physics. We are
looking for a highly motivated individual with an interest in
quantitative approaches to sensory perception and visual neuroscience.
Candidates must have strong quantitative skills, including a solid
background in statistics, numerical analysis and scientific programming
using Matlab/Octave (or equivalent). Previous experience with
neuroimaging or electrophysiological techniques and experimental design
and/or computational modelling is desirable.
The Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway is one of the top
Psychology departments in the UK, ranked 7th in the latest Research
Assessment Exercise. The Department has a thriving group of
internationally recognized vision researchers with expertise in a
diverse array of fields and techniques.
The planned start date is September 2010. The post will be offered on a
fixed-term contract for a period of three years. The salary for this
post will be in the range 31,987 - 35,733 per annum (inclusive of
London allowance).
Informal enquiries about the position should be addressed to Dr Jonas
Larsson: jonas.larsson at rhul.ac.uk
