POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN VISUAL PERCEPTION

A position is now available for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to
investigate human perception of surface and material properties as part
of a scientific team based within the School of Psychology at the
University of Sydney. Duties include (but not limited to) the design and
implementation of studies into the perception of surface and material
properties (e.g., lightness, colour, gloss, texture, translucency, 3D
surface shape perception); and communicating results to the broader
international scientific community.
You should ideally have demonstrated experience in conducting
psychophysical research and have recently completed a PhD in vision
science or related field of academic inquest. Applicants who will be
awarded their PhD degree before 1 October 2010 are also encouraged to
apply.
You will join a team lead by Professor Bart Anderson and have the
opportunity to conduct research in a vibrant academic environment of
talented vision scientists based at the University of Sydney and other
institutions around broader Sydney.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Desired
skills include knowledge and experience in image processing, image
analysis and 3D graphical simulation of lighting models (i.e., 3D ray
tracing). Ability to implement software programs in C/C++, Matlab,
and/or Python for stimulus generation, data acquisition and data
analysis is also desirable. Demonstrated current knowledge or ability to
implement new statistical techniques for the analysis of psychophysical
data is also desirable.
The position is fixed term initially for 12 months subject to the
completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.
Further offers may be available subject to performance, needs and
funding. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a
condition of employment for new appointees.
Remuneration package: level of appointment will be commensurate with
qualifications and experience, up to $90k p.a. (which includes base
salary at level A up to $76k p.a., leave loading and 17% employer’s
contribution to superannuation).
