*PhD Position: Vestibular Psychophysics*
Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany
University Hospital of Munich, Germany
One PhD position is available immediately to study visual-vestibular
perception and action in collaboration between the department of Human
Perception, Cognition and Action at the Max Planck Institute of Biological
Cybernetics with Dr. Michael Barnett-Cowan and in the newly established
Integrated Center for Research and Treatment of Vertigo, Balance and Ocular
Motor Disorders at the University Hospital of Munich with Dr. Paul
MacNeilage. The ultimate aim of the project is to develop and test
probabilistic models of visual-vestibular perception and action.
The PhD position will focus primarily on measuring perceptual and motor
response to self-motion stimulation using facilities at both institutions.
The MPI Cyberneum (www.cyberneum.de) is a newly developed, state-of-the-art
Virtual Reality (VR) research facility equipped with several sophisticated
VR and motion systems. A virtual reality system consisting of a 6
degree-of-freedom motion platform with attached wide field-of-view stereo
visual display is also available at the University Hospital of Munich.
Research will aim to quantify perceptual detection and discrimination
thresholds for self-motion using psychophysical methods and also postural
and ocular motor responses using motion and eye tracking equipment. Some
projects will involve patient populations with the aim of developing new
diagnostic procedures for use in the clinic. A background in psychophysics
and/or eye tracking, control theory and/or information theory is desirable.
The PhD position will be for three years and will be spent primarily in
Tübingen with the possibility of several visits to Munich. Tübingen and
Munich are very comfortable cities with world-class cultural attractions and
easy access to outdoor attractions including the Black Forest and the Alps.
There are large and vibrant neuroscience communities which include the
Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience, and the Hertie Institute for
Clinical Brain Research in Tübingen as well as the Bernstein Center for
Computational Neuroscience, the Graduate School of Systemic Neuroscience,
and the Neurology Department of the University Hospital in Munich.
For further information please contact Dr. Barnett-Cowan (*
mbc at tuebingen.mpg.de*) and Dr. MacNeilage (*
paul.macneilage at lrz.uni-muenchen.de*). The Bárány Society Meeting in
Reykjavik (August 18-21, 2010) and the European Conference on Visual
Perception in Lausanne, Switzerland (August 22-26, 2010) are good
opportunities to meet and discuss this position.
