Ph.D. positions to investigate the role of thalamo-cortical communication for visual perception
The laboratory of Prof. Dr. Pascal Fries at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI) in Cooperation with Max Planck Society is seeking candidates for two Ph.D. positions to study the neurophysiological mechanisms of visual attention and perception.
Projects will be supervised by Dr. Michael Schmid and will apply novel parallel electrophysiological recording techniques to investigate communication patterns between thalamic and cortical structures of the macaque monkey brain.
For related information, see Schmid et al., Blindsight depends on the lateral geniculate nucleus, Nature, 2010, and Fries, A mechanism for cognitive dynamics: neuronal communication through neuronal coherence, Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2005.
The ideal applicant has experience in electrophysiological recording or analysis methods. Quantitative skills, including fluency in Matlab, are not required initially, but will need to be developed through the course of the Ph.D. All applicants should have a high commitment, independence and curiosity about neuroscientific questions.
Interested candidates are invited to send their application materials in electronic form (PDF format) to michael.schmid at esi-frankfurt.de. Applications should contain a letter of intent, a detailed curriculum vitae, lists of university courses completed with marks obtained, and the names of at least two scientists who can give references.
