3- year ESRC funded post-doctoral research assistant

Department of Psychology, University of Hull, Hull, UK

The laboratory of Dr Nick Barraclough at the University of Hull is seeking a candidate for a 3-year ESRC funded post-doctoral position to study the mechanisms underlying action perception using immersive virtual reality.

The successful candidate will lead research efforts to understand action processing mechanisms using visual adaptation techniques within our psychophysics laboratory, as well as investigating how action processing mechanisms operate within naturalistic "real-life" environments by conducting experiments within the Hull Immersive Visualization Environment (HIVE, http://www2.hull.ac.uk/science/hive.aspx). The successful candidate will also interact closely with the Humberside Police force in order to determine how research findings into action perception can help improve judgments of human behaviour in security professionals. The successful candidate will work closely with the PI Dr Nick Barraclough (Psychology), and CIs Dr Tjeerd Jellema (Psychology) and Mr. James Ward (Computer Science) throughout.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related area. Demonstrated experience in running psychology or neuroscience experiments with human participants is required. Candidates should also have excellent written and oral communication skills, and should be able to demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm and a collaborative nature. Additional experience in visual adaptation and/or immersive virtual reality would be beneficial. Programming skills in a scientific programming language such as C or MATLAB would be beneficial; although not required initially, they would need to be developed during the course of the project.

Salary range £25,001 - £29,853 pa, pro rata.
