Research Technologist II ( E13812 )
Technician with an interest in Adaptive Optics Fundus imaging, Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science, The Hospital for Sick Children. Will work with a "Multimodal Adaptive Optics Retinal Imaging System" constructed by Physical Sciences Inc. Includes Optical Coherence Tomography, Adaptive Optics, Confocal laser Ophthalmoscope and fluorescence imaging.
Responsibilities

*                     Responsible for the organization of projects in Retinal Imaging Laboratory either alone or with employees performing less complex tasks.

*                     Performs a variety of technical retinal imaging assessments under general supervision. Assignments are broadly outlined and frequently require some theoretical insight, the interpretation of empirical data and the ability to find and extract pertinent information from technical literature. Occasionally modifies procedures and designs or creates new procedures. Will coordinate and/or direct work of others, order supplies and equipment. Provides continuity and is a source of information on a permanent basis.

*                     Considerable responsibility for day-to-day running operation and/or special projects. Will be responsible for procedures performed by fellows, students or employees in the lab.

*                     Will be involved in archiving, analyzing and extracting information from the instrument's images

*                     Will be directly involved in recruitment of subjects for retinal assessment.

*                     Will be involved with others in writing protocols for ethical approval by the hospital research ethics board.

Applies technical knowledge and skills to perform moderately complex laboratory procedures and experiments.

Exercises independent judgment and decision making using established policies and procedures, to resolve technical problems.

*                     Works under direction of Principal investigators (Dr Westall, SickKids; Dr Campbell, University of Waterloo Physics.).

*                     Work may be reviewed to ensure conformity to research objectives.

Leadership

*                     Leads self and peers by conduct and example.

*                     Follows established guidelines, procedures and standards.

*                     May provide functional supervision to lower classified staff

Communication

*                     Able to communicate complex concepts to non-specialists both medical and non-medical and to students.

*                     Demonstrates excellent competency in written and verbal communications.

*                     Able to work in a team environment

Education/Experience Required:
Bachelor of Science degree (physics or engineering preferred). MD (Ophthalmology) with experience in a research environment or post graduate training with a minimum of two years experience in retinal imaging. Adaptive optics experience an advantage.
Relationships:
Reports to Principal Investigator and/or Lab Manager.
