Postdoctoral/research associate vacancy, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London
Applications are invited from suitably qualified, enthusiastic and
motivated individuals to join a research group, led by Professor Adam
Sillito, using a variety of techniques to explore the mechanisms of
visual perception and attention in the visual system.
The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in
all areas of the group's work and to be prepared and able to take
responsibility for effective organization and day to day running of
designated aspects of the experimental program including designing
and performing experiments, data analysis and the presentation of the
results. The post-holder will be particularly involved in innovative
research on the interplay between feed forward and feedback systems
in visual processing and the way attentional mechanisms are
integrated at thalamic level utilising a range of multi-disciplinary
techniques including visual stimulation, in vivo electrophysiology,
multiple electrode recordings, neuropharmacological manipulation,
neurohistology, programming and electronics together with a variety
of data analytical approaches.
Successful applicants will have a strong interest in visual
processing and the neurobiology of vision and should have a PhD in
neuroscience (or a related discipline) or must have extensive
background knowledge, expertise and proven skills in a directly
related research setting together with an honours degree in a
relevant scientific subject. Candidates should have proven relevant
expertise in one or more of the following: a) in vivo
electrophysiological recording techniques; b) training and running of
behavioural neuroscience experiments; c) in depth understanding of
the central visual system, motion processing, attention and feedback
pathways together with high level programming skills and the proven
ability to program visual stimuli. Whilst experience in some or all
of the other techniques would be highly advantageous, some training
can be provided where necessary thus candidates with the necessary
background knowledge and skill sets, intellectual and technical
aptitude and a commitment to learn are also encouraged to
apply. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational
skills, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a
team are also essential.
This position, available immediately, is funded by the BBSRC and
funding is available to the 31st December 2013, in the first instance.
