PhD position:

Towards a perceptual metric based on multimodality for video quality
assessment

The technological progress of the last decade has led to an increased
network capacity and allowed thus exchanges of larger contents. The
emergence of HDTV over IP, video exchanges website, distributed video
surveillance solutions, videoconferencing, video telephony, were the
consequence of the mentioned progress. This new way of sharing
information requires the use of rigorous tools to control and ensure
an acceptable quality in terms for the end-used. From the research
point of view, an important effort has been devoted to the study of
tools for assessing video quality of videos and the existing relation
with the quality of experience (QoE) rather than the quality of
service (QoS) only. However, current tools cannot address this problem
completely. We thus find, approaches using a simple weighting of image
metrics by using the motion. Very few approaches deal with
multimodality (Video+audio) despite the importance of this aspect for
QoE.

The proposed PhD program is in the context of multimodal quality
assessment of a video. This work intends to overcome the shortcomings
of existing metrics by integrating some useful modules to estimate the
quality in a similar manner than the end-user judgment. It aims at
offering an objective solution to quality assessment taking into
account both temporal and multimodal aspects of a video. Several
points will be addressed as:

· Role of motion in video quality estimation

· Audio-visual saliency effect on quality measurement

· Multimodal interaction

· Relationship between compression, bandwidth, motion and quality

· From QoS to QoE

· Pooling strategies

· …

The topic of the PhD can be refocused depending on the project needs
and the candidate skills.

Funding:

The selected candidate will be an employee of the university of
Poitiers for 3 years. The gross salary will include health insurance,
paid leave+public holidays and other benefits. Applications from all
nationalities are welcomed although some security restrictions may
apply.
