A postdoctoral position is available in the Laboratory of Vision
Research / Center for Cognitive Science (RuCCS;
http://ruccs.rutgers.edu/ruccs) at Rutgers University for highly skilled and
motivated candidates. We study how people recover 3-D shape for objects,
scenes and faces, especially under self-motion. We focus on the interaction
of data-driven (bottom-up) and schema-driven (top-down) signals in 3-D
perception. The ideal candidate is someone with a Ph.D. in visual
psychophysics or in computer vision/graphics and a strong background in
statistical analysis. Programming experience with Matlab, Psychophysics
ToolBox or C is important.
There are important projects to work on, depending on the candidate’s
interests and skills. One direction is to design strategic psychophysical
experiments with the goal to develop computational models based on human
performance (Papathomas Lab: http://ruccs.rutgers.edu/~papathom). Another
direction is to work on visuomotor experiments to study how the
vision-for-perception and vision-for-action systems interact and work
together (Torres Lab: https://sites.google.com/site/blurbaboutmywork/home).
A third potential project is to study differences in 3-D perception between
patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls with the goal of developing
diagnostic tools and tests. We have recently started a collaboration with
Prof. S. Silverstein of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New
Jersey (UMDNJ).
The post-doctoral associate will be working with Thomas Papathomas
(psychophysics, modeling) and a team of researchers, depending on her/his
interests: Liz Torres, Rob Isenhower (sensory-motor integration); Dimitris
Metaxas (computer vision); Doug DeCarlo (computer graphics); Steve
Silverstein, Brian Keane (visual perception and schizophrenia). This is a
one-year appointment, renewable for one or two additional years.
Rutgers University in New Brunswick has a strong interdisciplinary
group in human and machine vision that the post-doctoral associate can
interact with. Members of this group come from RuCCS, the Departments of
Psychology (J. Feldman, E. Kowler, Z. Pylyshyn, M. Singh, E. Torres),
Computer Science (D. Metaxas, V. Pavlovic, D. DeCarlo, A. Elgammal),
Biomedical Engineering (e.g., T.V. Papathomas, W. Craelius), and Philosophy
(e.g., B. McLaughlin, A. Goldman). The interdisciplinary group has been
awarded a major NSF IGERT grant for research and training in perceptual
science (PI: E. Kowler) that supports a large number of graduate students in
the affiliated Departments.
The position is open immediately. We will start considering candidates
in April 2011, but we will consider applications on a rolling basis. Interested
candidates can see Thomas Papathomas at VSS (Saturday Poster Session - 3D
perception: Contours, shading and texture - Orchid Ballroom, 8:15am-12:15pm
and exhibit on Monday "Demo Night"). Rutgers University is an Equal
Opportunity employer that promotes diversity. We encourage people in
under-represented groups to apply.
