The Fifth Annual Berkeley Conference on Translational Research

UC Berkeley ~ June 25-26, 2011

The conference will explore new solutions to
optical problems, showcasing cutting-edge
research, some of which may be directly applied
to patient care. Specific targets include
presbyopia, a problem of the aging eye from which
no one escapes, and myopia, which continues to
climb in prevalence. Growing interest in
incorporating a 3D experience into movies and
other screen-based recreational activities has
added new challenges and introduced evolving
technologies that will likely have a wide-ranging
impact in medical and educational applications,
also to be discussed in this meeting. The
conference will draw on expertise from both U.S.
and international scholars.

CE credits for optometrists are available, as are
travel grants for junior researchers who agree to
submit an abstract and present a poster. Several
of the best scientific posters will be eligible
for cash prizes. Registration includes
continental breakfast, lunch and a wine & cheese
reception after the Saturday, June 25 sessions.

Sunday, June 26: Workshop on Grant Writing and Career Planning

This workshop will be of particular interest to
graduate students, NEI-K12 trainees, and young
faculty interested in obtaining first-hand
knowledge from successful grantees and
representatives from the National Eye Institute.
Principal investigators of NEI-K12 training
grants and mentors will discuss recruitment and
other issues related to running a successful
training program.
