PhD or post-doc in Cognitive Neuroscience:
Neurophysiology of visual cognition - how does acetylcholine mediate
attention, memory and learning in the visual cortex?
A PhD or postdoctoral position is available to study the neural correlates of
visual perception, attention, and conscious awareness in the Dept. Vision &
Cognition (head Pieter Roelfsema) at the Netherlands Institute for
Neuroscience in Amsterdam.
Early areas of the visual cortex like V1, V2 and V4 contribute to attention and
awareness (see e.g. Roelfsema 2006 Annu Rev Neurosci.). The present project
aims to measure the involvement of acetylcholine in attention, awareness and
short-term memory by using electrochemistry to measure the fluctuations in
the acetylcholine concentration in the cortex during a task and by
neurophysiological techniques. Are shifts in attention mediated by changes in
the concentration of acetylcholine?
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cognitive neuroscience,
preferably with some experience in neurophysiological techniques, and
strong programming skills. Preference will be given to candidates with
experience in collecting and analyzing neural activity in alert animals.
Appointment:
The position involves a temporary appointment for 3 (postdoc) or 4 years
(PhD student).
To apply, please send application letter, CV and two letters of
