I am pleased to announce the Birmingham Object Lighting Database (BOLD).

www.bold.bham.ac.uk

BOLD offers stereoscopic image pairs of objects, surfaces, faces and outdoor scenes. The objects, surfaces are illuminated with 113 different lighting profiles including a spherical diffuse source provided by a 1m diameter integrating sphere (with the object on the inside). Face images are captured under a similar, but smaller range of illuminants. Outdoor scenes were taken on sunny days and we have recorded sun positions, date time, and location for these images.

The database was funded by the EPSRC and is freely available.

The images were taken with a pair of high resolution digital cameras and have been rendered into sRGB space but with a linear gamma (that is image intensity is linear with luminance). A 16bit png format is used. Transforms are provided in MatLab to convert to 8bit non-linear (normal) sRGB, XYZ, and Lu'v' formats (the latter formats given standard illuminants A for Faces and D50, or D65 for outdoor). The stereo base was 9.54cm.

The emphasis of the database is on textures and shading / shadows. To this end the surface images show a range of undulating profiles with different surface textures (both painted and rough). Ground truth height maps are provided for many of these surfaces.

The database has both quick search and extended search facilities and images can be downloaded either individually or in sets corresponding to the same subject under different lighting conditions photographed by one of the two cameras.

If you use these images please cite Jiang, X., Schofield, A.J., Wyatt, J.L., (2010) Correlation-Based Intrinsic Image Extraction from a Single Image, in K. Daniilidis, P. Maragos, N. Paragios (Eds.) ECCV 2010, Part IV, LNCS 6314, pp. 58-71, Springer-Verlag, Berlin. And fill in our user survey.

Yours
Andrew
