IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Optics 2011

For the third year running the International Commission for Optics (ICO), in 2011, will give out the IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Optics. The IUPAP Prize, which includes a medal, a certificate, and a cash award of ?1000 provided by the IUPAP, is an achievement prize for optical scientist in early career. The prize is administered by the ICO as an Affiliate External Commission of the IUPAP. The previous winners have been Dr. Shuang Zhang  (University of Birmingham, 2010) and Dr. Eleftherios Goulielmakis (MPI Garching, 2009).

The IUPAP Prize in Optics is awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of applied optics and photonics. Specifically, the rules state that the awardee can have no more than eight years of research experience after obtaining the doctoral degree (possible career interruptions are excluded). Hence the winner of the 2011 IUPAP Prize must have completed the doctoral degree in the year 2004 or later. The scientific achievement must be well documented in the literature.

Nominations for the 2011 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Optics are accepted until 15 July 2011. The detailed instructions and the nomination form are found on the ICO website (www.ico-optics.org).  

Encouraging the young, excellent scientists in the early stages of their careers is an important part of the training. It may lead to high rewards in scientific accomplishments. Therefore I ask all research leaders to nominate their best and brightest young optical researchers for the IUPAP Prize in Optics.
