The Machine Vision Group, University of Oulu, Finland, celebrating this 
year its 30^th anniversary, is renowned worldwide for its expertise in 
computer vision. We collaborate with other groups of similar status in 
Europe, China, USA and Japan. The group is now searching for prominent 
candidates to work as

POST DOC OR RESEARCH ASSISTANT (DOCTORAL STUDENT)

in our challenging and inspiring research projects. The work is carried 
out in a team consisting of senior researchers and doctoral students. 
The research topics will include novel image and video descriptors for 
computer vision, and methods for analyzing human emotions and 
communicative behavior.

The Machine Vision Group has reached outstanding results e.g. in texture 
analysis, face recognition and recognition of facial expressions using 
Local Binary Patterns. Also, novel methods for recognizing actions and 
gestures have been developed. The methods and their extensions are 
widely used and further developed within the scientific community.

An ideal candidate should have a completed PhD or Master degree (or 
equivalent studies in a PhD program) in computer science or electrical 
engineering with previous experience and publications on computer 
vision. Programming skills with C/C++/Matlab are desired. Also, good 
knowledge of spoken and written English is required.

Duration of the contract is at first one year, but it can be continued 
depending on the progress in research and funding available. There is a 
possibility to apply for a max. 4-year term position from e.g. the 
Infotech Oulu Doctoral Program of the University of Oulu Graduate 
School.As a Finnish University, there is currently no tuition fee for 
the studies.

Starting salary for the PhD position is currently 2800-3400 euros per 
month and for PhD students 2200-2500 euros (before tax) depending on the 
qualifications. Additionally, doctoral students have several 
possibilities to apply for personal grants, tax-free to a certain amount 
annually.
