The Post
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a scientist to make a real, long term difference as Professorial Head of the Department of Life Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). We seek to make a permanent Professorial appointment with the Head of Department role being for a 3 year period, renewable once. The opportunity arises from the configuration of the new School of Health and Life Sciences comprising of three Departments: Life Sciences, Health and Community Sciences, and Psychology and Allied Health Sciences.
The Candidate
We are looking for an outstanding and enthusiastic academic, with an international research profile and good communication skills, who will enjoy working with colleagues in the newly reconfigured Department of Life Sciences. We would like to appoint an academic who is interested in offering dynamic, forward thinking and innovative leadership in programmatic, focused research and knowledge exchange of international excellence contributing to applied health and wellbeing and contributing to enhanced REF submissions . We anticipate, that to engage in active leadership in this area, the candidate's own research track record and plan will complement and extend existing applied themes within the Department, together with the interdisciplinary connections (eg Diabetes, Biomedical Science, Food Bioscience, Vision Science).
The post holder will contribute to growing the subject specific and interdisciplinary contributions of the whole School of Health and Life Sciences, but have particular experience of managing multidisciplinary scientific groupings in an academic context. The candidate will enjoy working with colleagues to ensure an energetic Department that meets the challenges of GCU's national and international mission in research and in relevant undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral provision.
Department of Life Sciences
The multidisciplinary Department of Life Sciences consists of 115 staff and is committed to the pursuit of excellence in learning & teaching, research, knowledge exchange and commercialization. The Department has three core areas: Biomedical Sciences, Food Bioscience and Vision Sciences. More than 1000 students study a range of undergraduate degree programmes including (Applied) Biomedical Science, Dietetics, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Optometry, Dispensing Optics, Clinical Physiology, Forensic Investigation, Human Biology with Sociology & Psychology.. We have more than 100 international students on a range of taught postgraduate programmes including a suite of MSc Biological Science programmes, Clinical Nutrition & Health and Diabetes Care Management. Vision Science, with Optometry and Dispensing Optics, is the only provision of its kind in Scotland, enabling a unique contribution to combining evidence and practice for the modernization of delivery of vision services nationally and internationally.
