PhD studentship position at Cardiff University

This PhD studentship, funded by the BBSRC, will be supervised by Jon
Erichsen at the Cardiff School of Optometry & Vision Sciences and Tom
Freeman at the Cardiff School of Psychology.

The study, entitled “Models of oculomotor control as a means of
understanding oscillopsia”, will involve testing a variety of
oculomotor models using a clinical population (i.e. those with
congenital nystagmus) to improve our understanding of the underlying
control systems as well as the repercussions of continuous eye
movements on vision. An additional goal is to elucidate more generally
the interplay between oculomotor control mechanisms and visual motion
perception in the normal population by comparing performance in those
with stable gaze with those whose eyes are constantly moving. The
successful candidate will have access to extensive and well-equipped
eye movement research facilities in both Schools.

The candidate would normally be expected to have graduated with at
least a II-1 degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Vision
Sciences, Psychology, Biology, etc.). Full awards (fees plus
maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals, and EU students who can
satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award,
EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to
the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including
for the purposes of full-time education. EU Nationals who do not meet
the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees-only award,
provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at
least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.

Closing date: 18th November 2011
Proposed start date: 1st January 2012
