POSTDOC POSITION IN NEW YORK ON ADAPTATION OF SACCADIC EYE MOVEMENTS
A postdoctoral position is available immediately on an NIH-funded project concerning the role of reinforcement learning in saccade adaptation in humans.
Saccade adaptation is a form of motor learning that alters the size or direction of saccades if they consistently miss their target. In the laboratory, this adaptation is provoked by having a computer surreptitiously shift the target during the saccade. It is unclear whether to regard saccade adaptation as a specialized type of learning (parametric feedback) that adjusts the parameters of the oculomotor system to minimize the visual error after a saccade or to regard it is as an example of reinforcement learning, in which saccades that land near to the target are differentially reinforced, thereby changing the average saccade landing position.
Candidates should have a background in either eye movements or in visual psychophysics, learning or decision-making. Computer skills are essential; familiarity with Matlab or LabView is desirable.
