PhD Studentship - Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences, Anglia Ruskin University
Application Deadline: 18th November

First Supervisor
Dr Monika A Formankiewicz (Senior Lecturer in Vision Science)
Anglia Vision Research

Second Supervisor
Dr Sarah J Waugh (Reader in Vision Science)
Anglia Vision Research

The Programme
Anglia Vision Research is a stimulating, coherent research group in the Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences, Faculty of Science & Technology. Consisting of academic staff with a wealth of international experience in research, research training and teaching in optometry and vision sciences, the group continues to be strengthened and invigorated by a growing PhD student base. We have collaborative links with Addenbrooke's hospital in paediatric eyecare and the University of Cambridge. Anglia Ruskin University provides high quality, structured research training and a stimulating research environment in which to work, which includes the Vision and Eye Research Unit within the Postgraduate Medical Institute.

We have recently been awarded a Departmental Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) to attract an outstanding graduate in a science-related discipline (e.g. Physics, Psychology, Engineering, Optometry) to undertake a vision science doctoral research degree. Scholars will have been awarded a first or upper second class honours degree and have strong quantitative skills. The studentship will provide tuition fees (for UK or EU students) and a maintenance bursary in exchange for up to 6 hours per week contribution to the Department's teaching requirements. Prospective candidates would need to be either EU citizens or with leave to remain in the UK. The interview date is 25th November and the start date is 19th January, 2012.

The Topic
The changing percept observed during binocular rivalry reflects the short-term plasticity of the visual system. The project will investigate the characteristics and plasticity of binocular rivalry between stimuli designed to probe different neural pathways or loci of the visual system using psychophysical and human visual electrophysiological techniques. The information provided will be valuable to the understanding of the underlying visual processing mechanisms and will also have implications to clinical conditions in which binocular vision is disturbed, e.g. amblyopia.

The studentship will involve empirical data collection and statistical analysis of quantitative data. Given the nature of the project, applicants with a special interest in binocular vision assessment and knowledge of, or a keen willingness to learn programming in MatLab, will have an advantage.
