Dear Vision colleagues:

Further to our previous e-mail over the networks and following contact with his family, here is a short update on the circumstances up to and following Tom's unexpected death. We think these are as full as the facts are likely to become.

Tom was travelling to Mainz (Germany) to give a lecture, and stayed overnight in a hotel in Amsterdam on Tuesday 15th November, intending to catch a train on to Germany in the morning. From his last text messages we know he had a very happy evening visiting a coffee shop and taking a misty moonlight walk by the railway where he enjoyed the stars. He died peacefully in his sleep in the hotel, probably of a heart attack. His body was discovered on Wednesday morning but bureaucratic delays meant that this was not reported to friends and family until Thursday afternoon.

Tom's two adult children (Emily and Jolyon) have joined Tom's former wife and lifelong friend (Sue) and her husband (Adam) in Devon. Tom's partner (Carol) is also with them. The funeral will be for family and close friends and is likely to take place in Devon soon. There will be a much larger service in the New Year to celebrate Tom's life. This will probably take place in Bristol. Details will be announced through the usual channels when available.
