Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the LS13 Local and International Organizing Committees, I am pleased to formally announce the next conference on light sources and lighting science and technology.  The Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is honored to have been asked to host this very important conference.

The LS13 conference follows the 40-year tradition of providing the forum for scientific and technical discussions of the most recent developments in light sources and lighting systems. The scope of the conference includes LED and OLED solid-state lighting technologies (SSL), thermal, discharge and plasma lighting technologies as well as any new developments in light generation with technology potential.

In relation to SSL developments we are particularly pleased that the Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies (ASSIST), now in its 10th year, is sponsoring a session where member organizations will present their latest technical developments. Another notable addition to this year’s conference is a special session where the CTOs of leading lighting companies will provide their visions for the future of light source and system developments. Also new to the LS program on this occasion will be a special session on lighting metrics.  This session will focus on how light sources affect visual and non-visual functions such as color rendering and circadian stimulation.

As is usual in the LS conference series, each of the morning and afternoon sessions will open and close with presentations of Invited and Landmark papers, judged to be of special interest to the community. These oral sessions are held either side of a poster session comprising each of the papers contributed to the conference and designed to enable and encourage open discussions. Papers presented at LS13 will be published in a Proceedings Volume that will be submitted to the major abstraction services.

Regarding the general conference arrangements, described in the Registration materials, please notice especially both the proximity of Troy to a number of major international airports, providing numerous opportunities for economical travel arrangements, and the remarkably low costs of food and accommodation provided by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The organizers hope that these two special features will help encourage the widest possible participation at the conference, especially by students and others new to the field.

LS13 is taking place at a time of rapid change in the science and technology of lighting. The organizers, with their long established, close involvement with the light source manufacturing industry, are working hard to ensure that delegates will gain a comprehensive overview of the current status of the field, its challenges and its opportunities.
