The department Medical and Biological Informatics of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany offers two PhD positions for graduate students with interests in medical image computing and computer aided surgery.
Subject: 3D C-Arm supported calcaneus reconstruction
Fractures of the calcaneus need a surgical reconstruction of the bone fragments which are reattached by surgical screws. A possible complication of this intervention is that the screws are positioned to deep in the bone leading to a fixation of other anatomical structures. To control the success of the operation a 3D C-Arm is used.
In this research project an automatic orientation of the C-Arm image data is elaborated as well as a segmentation and pose estimation of the used screws to visualize the operation result intra-operatively to the surgeon.
