A postdoctoral position is available in the Pediatric Eye
Research Laboratory at the Retina Foundation of the Southwest, under the
direction of Eileen Birch, Ph.D. Our current research focuses on binocular
dysfunction in infantile and accommodative esotropia, risk factors for the
onset of strabismic amblyopia and the recurrence of amblyopia, new treatment
protocols for amblyopia, and, in esotropic infants, the failure of the
visually guided mechanism that normally stimulates axial growth to reduce
infantile hyperopia.
We employ a multidisciplinary approach, including psychophysics,
electrophysiology, digital imaging, refraction/accommodation, optical
coherence tomography, and ocular biometry. The laboratory is also involved
in the design and conduct of randomized clinical trials in infant nutrition
and pediatric ophthalmology. Funding is available for up to 3 years.
The research environment at the Retina Foundation of the
Southwest and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center provides
many opportunities for developing a broader knowledge of ophthalmology and
vision research. The fellow will participate in teaching seminars and the
Ethics in Human Subjects Research program at the medical center as well as
weekly research group meetings and journal clubs at the Retina Foundation of
the Southwest and monthly regional pediatric ophthalmology meetings.
Start date is flexible.
