2 PhD positions at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver

Applications are invited for 2 fully-funded 4-year PhD positions in the
group of Dr. Miriam Spering at the University of British Columbia, Dept.
of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, Vancouver, Canada. The positions are
funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of
Canada (NSERC).

Research in the lab addresses the interaction between visual perception
and movement in healthy humans and patients. See
http://visualcognition.ca/spering for a research overview and recent
publications. Students will have access to an exceptionally wide range
of world-class experimental facilities, including several eye trackers
(such as a dual-Purkinje image eye tracker, Eyelink 1000, Chronos ETD),
motion trackers (Vicon, Ascension), haptic devices (Phantom) and virtual
reality displays.

Applicants should have a strong background in psychology, neuroscience
or related disciplines. Enthusiasm for scientific research and excellent
communication skills are essential. Existing programming skills (e.g.,
Matlab, C) and an affinity towards quantitative methods are desirable or
must be acquired during the PhD work.

Successful applicants will be part of a vibrant, highly collaborative,
multidisciplinary community within Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences and
with collaborators in Computer Science and Neurology at UBC; students
will also be members of the Graduate Program in Neuroscience at UBC,
which provides multidisciplinary training and networking opportunities
for around 50 graduate students. Applicants have to fulfill admission
requirements of this program and go through the regular admissions
process (http://www.neuroscience.ubc.ca/admissions_requirements.htm).

Vancouver is spectacularly situated amidst ocean, mountains and forests
and has consistently been listed as one of the most livable cities in
the world by The Economist. The lab is located at Vancouver General
Hospital, within easy reach of both UBC campus and downtown Vancouver.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, full curriculum vitae,
and two recent references electronically (all files in one pdf) to
miriam.spering at ubc.ca. The start date is flexible but should be between
June 1, 2012 and April 1, 2013. Applications will be considered until
both positions are filled.
