Post-doc & Ph.D. positions to investigate thalamo-cortical communication using electrophysiology and optogenetics
The laboratory of Dr. Michael C. Schmid http://www.esi-frankfurt.de/research/schmid-lab/ at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI) for Neuroscience in Cooperation with Max Planck Society is seeking candidates for Post-docs and Ph.D. positions to study neurophysiological mechanisms of visual perception.
Projects will apply novel parallel electrophysiological recording techniques in combination with pharmacological and optogenetic manipulation methods to investigate communication patterns between visual thalamic and cortical structures of the macaque monkey brain. For related information, see Schmid et al., Blindsight depends on the lateral geniculate nucleus, Nature, 2010. The Schmid lab is an Emmy Noether junior research group financed by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and hosted by ESI. Tight current collaborations exist with the Logothetis lab (Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, Tübingen, Germany) and the Fries, Singer and Diester groups at ESI.
The ideal post-doc applicant seeks to expand his experience in electrophysiological recording or analysis methods with applying optogenetic methods that are established in the lab. PhD student applicants should have first experience in working with animals and quantitative skills, including fluency in Matlab. All applicants should have a high commitment, independence and curiosity about neuroscientific questions.
Interested candidates are invited to send their application materials in electronic form (PDF format) to michael.schmid at esi-frankfurt.de<mailto:michael.schmid at esi-frankfurt.de>. Applications should contain a letter of intent, a detailed curriculum vitae, lists of university courses completed with marks obtained, and the names of at least two scientists who can give references.
