The department Medical and Biological Informatics of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany offers one PhD position for graduate students with interests in medical image computing and computer aided surgery.
Subject: Quantitative Analysis of Regional Lung Movement using MRT at High Temporal Resolution
Computer-based diagnosis of local lung function for the assessment of pulmonary function, spirometry is currently the state of the art method. However, spirometry only allows quantification of global lung function. To diagnose local obstructions caused by e.g. tumors or fibrosis, one possibility is to acquire time-resolved magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. By matching images from different time steps, a deformation map can be computed that allows quantification of local lung function. While matching or registration of lung images is a common approach for CT data, the lower contrast and resolution of MRI data makes this a challenging project.
The PhD student will develop automated, model-based segmentation methods to extract the lung from MRI data. He will further work on non-rigid registration methods and combine these with the results from the segmentation for a better fit. He will devise feature maps and corresponding cost functions to make the registration robust in the presence of acquisition artifacts. Throughout the project, he will cooperate with partners from the DKFZ radiology and medical physics groups who are working on the image acquisition.

Preference will be given to candidates who finished their master studies in computer science, physics or mathematics with outstanding results and have profound C++ programming skills. Please note that English as well as German language skills are required for this position!
