Research Fellowship (pending funding) in EEG correlates of visual consciousness (0.8 position for 6 months) at the lovely, sub-tropical, Coffs Harbour, Australia.
Position Overview
Southern Cross University’s School of Health and Human Sciences is seeking to appoint a research fellow to support the School’s Professor of Psychology by undertaking research, writing research papers, and writing grant applications.
One of the research areas supported by the School of Health and Human Sciences is cognitive neuroscience. This research seeks to answer questions about the fundamental principles of brain functions mediating awareness, selfawareness, and awareness of others in healthy and in diseased and injured brains. A major strand of the Professor’s research within this area is into mechanisms of human visual consciousness. Research equipment includes a BrainProducts, 64-channel, EEG system and and EyeLink 1000 eye tracker.
The successful applicant will have a research background in using EEG to explore the time and place in the brain of fundamental perceptual processes, including those mediating visual consciousness. In the role the successful applicant will work closely with colleagues within the School and Faculty.
The successful applicant may be required to travel between University campuses in order to undertake duties.
Selection Criteria
The appointee must possess:
1. A doctoral degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, or relevant discipline.
Ideally, the appointee should possess the following qualifications, skills, abilities, and experience:
2. Demonstrated skills in conducting experiments using EEG measures.
3. Demonstrated skills in analysing the locations of sources from high-density EEG recordings.
4. Facility in writing MatLab code to run EEG experiments and to analyse their data.
5. Publications in relevant, high-impact, refereed journals, at least commensurate with the level of appointment.
6. Capacity to apply for internal and external research grants and other funds.
7. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, exercising initiative and time management skills.
8. Willingness and ability to engage with the regional community and other external stakeholders and to represent SCU in building collaborations under direction.
9. Excellent communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to undertake report writing.
10. A capacity for adaptability and flexibility in a rapidly changing environment.
11. Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and a working knowledge of equity and OH&S principles in the workplace.
Minimum Standards for Academic Levels:
A Level A research academic will typically conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team and will normally hold a relevant higher degree.
A Level A research academic will normally work under the supervision of academic staff at Level B or above, with an increasing degree of autonomy as the research academic gains skills and experience. A Level A research academic may undertake limited teaching, may supervise at undergraduate levels, and may publish the results of the research conducted as sole author or in collaboration. He or she will undertake administration primarily relating to his or her activities at the institution.
