Dear All,

It is with great sadness that I write of the passing of Sir Andrew Huxley on 30th May 2012. He was 94. The field of physiology has lost a great giant. All of us who are actively involved in what we now call neurophysiology have him to thank for his
fundamental work on the propagation of an action potential for which he won the Nobel prize for physiology and medicine. He shared the prize with Sir Alan Hodgkin and Sir John Eccles in 1963.

We have not only lost a great scientist, but a wonderful, warm and kind human being, with a sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humour. With his constantly enquiring mind, he inspired a love of Science in anyone who met him. He was a formidable intellect and yet, a completely modest human being.

I am privileged to have known him for over 30 years.
