Salary: $59,465 - $80,939 p.a. plus 9% superannuation

This position is to conduct research as part of an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant Project (DP120100651; Getting back on track after the unexpected happens: decision making in predictable and unpredictable environments) together with chief investigators Dr Andrew Anderson (Department of Optometry & Vision Sciences) and Assoc. Prof. Peter Brotchie (Department of Radiology) and with partner investigator Prof. RHS Carpenter (Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, Cambridge University). The successful applicant will be based primarily in the Department of Optometry & Vision Sciences, and report to Dr Anderson.

This project will examine decision-making by examining one of the most common decisions we make - deciding which part of the world to look at next. It is known that the time to look at a randomly appearing target reflects the timing of the brain's decision-making processes, although this relationship is less well established when events occur in patterned sequences. Such sequences are important as many of our daily actions consist of routine patterns that are believed to be controlled by special areas of the brain. The project studies decision-making using patterned sequences, as well as what happens when an expected pattern is disrupted, and so will help understand how the brain makes a very common type of decision in the real world. Preliminary work has been described in Anderson & Carpenter (2010). Journal of Vision, 10:12, with the current research aimed to more fully explore questions regarding how patterns are learnt by the oculomotor system, as well as what types of stimuli can disrupt learnt patterns. We also aim to use fMRI to investigate the areas of the brain involved in regulating our responses to patterned targets.

A full position description can be found on the University of Melbourne's website (Position No. 0029240; http://jobs.unimelb.edu.au), along with details of how to submit an application. Applications close on 21st June, 2012. Informal enquiries can be made to Andrew Anderson (aaj at unimelb.edu.au).
