PhD studentship in Motion Computation for Natural Scenes
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in the Department of Cognitive, Perceptual and Brain Sciences, UCL, under the supervision of Prof Alan Johnston in collaboration with Dr Shin’ya Nishida, NTT. The PhD research is jointly funded by UCL and NTT Communication Science Laboratories. The aim of the project is the computation and characterisation of motion patterns arising from non-rigid, natural, dynamic scenes such as those arising from flowing water, wind blown trees or flocking birds. The student will work closely with vision scientists who are working on the problem of how human observers compute image flow from the outputs of local motion sensors, perceive dynamic physical properties, such as viscosity or elasticity, from the image flow, and use image motion to control action. The PhD would be based in the UCL Vision Research Lab directed by Prof Alan Johnston at UCL. For more information visit the lab website: http://www.psychol.ucl.ac.uk/vision/Lab_Site/Home.html. The laboratory is well equipped for research in human vision and computer vision with a number of psychophysics laboratories and a 128 core compute cluster running parallel Matlab for computationally intensive research.
Applicants should have a good upper second or first-class degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. cognitive science, physics, mathematics, computer science, computational neuroscience or engineering). Knowledge or experience in a relevant area (e.g. computer vision, vector calculus, fluid mechanics) and an MSc in a relevant subject are highly desirable. An interest in human vision is essential. The work would require strong programming skills (e.g. in Matlab, C/C++) as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. The studentship will carry a stipend of £15,590 and fees at UK/EU rates, with a start date of 1st October 2012, subject to contractual agreement between UCL and NTT.
Applicants are invited to apply by e-mail to a.johnston at ucl.ac.uk<mailto:rosalyn.lawrence at ucl.ac.uk> attaching a CV and transcripts where available and a one page supplementary personal statement explaining why they wish to apply for this studentship by the closing date of 6th July. The CV must state the degree class achieved (or the current average grade) and should also include the names and contacts details of two academic referees, who may be approached at the interview stage.
