The School of Health Sciences is dedicated to the education and development of health and community-based professionals and has a strong research culture that supports a wide range of high quality research. It is committed to increasing its research by attracting more external grant income and increasing the volume of publications in high quality research outputs.

The mission of the Division of Optometry & Visual Science is to serve the eye care community by providing academic and clinically excellent teaching and research.  We have a strong research record and have been involved in teaching optometry and its predecessor subjects since 1898.  There are currently four research themes: visual neuroscience and psychophysics; measurement techniques in clinical optics; visual development and plasticity; and ophthalmic public health.  All staff are involved in at least one of these themes, which span fundamental neuroscience to translational research directly influencing clinical practice.  Research funding is received from research councils, charities, industry and UK government.  All staff are also highly engaged in developing academically excellent and clinically relevant education for optometrists at undergraduate and postgraduate level   The Division has approximately 30 research students and post-doctoral workers engaged on ongoing projects.  We remain committed to enhancing further the quality of our teaching and research.

As part of the development of the School of Health Sciences, applications are invited from suitably qualified research excellent academics in the area of Optometry and Visual Science.
