The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology
to Hold Global Research Congress on Artificial Vision

DETROIT – Internationally renowned scientists are coming to Detroit to discuss advancements in artificial vision.

The Eye and The Chip, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology’s 7th Biennial Congress on Artificial Vision, will be held September 9 - 11, at the Detroit Marriott.

The DIO is a division of Henry Ford Health System’s Department of Ophthalmology.

Panelists for The Eye and the Chip are coming from across the U.S., as well as Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

“This three-day congress provides a format for the exchange of scientific advances among the participants,” says Philip Hessburg, M.D., medical director of the DIO. “The collaboration created at these congresses helps to advance research at a faster pace.”

Electronic devices can communicate with the brain, notes Dr. Hessburg, although implants to enhance vision are not yet approved for use in the U.S.

“The Eye and the Chip meeting provides the best venue for scientific and academic exchange in the world for the field of visual prosthetics,” says Joseph Rizzo, M.D., of Harvard Medical School.

The institute hosts two biennial world research congresses. In alternate years, The Eye and The Auto addresses issues related to vision and safe driving.

The Detroit Marriott is located at 400 Renaissance Drive, in Detroit, Michigan.
