*6th Annual Berkeley Conference on Translational Research: Improving Access
to Eye Care Through Translational Research*

The Berkeley Clinical Science Development Program is pleased to announce
the Sixth Annual Berkeley Conference on Translational Research, September
8–9, 2012, to be held in Stanley Hall on the University of California,
Berkeley campus.

*The last day for early registration is August 25, 2012. *

This year’s conference will explore new technological and educational
innovations and their potential impact of the standard and accessibility of
eye care to low income, underserved and frequently uninsured populations in
the US as well as equivalent groups overseas. There are an increasing
number of low cost ophthalmic devices with potential application in these
settings. While such innovations are often designed to fulfill a need in
underserved populations, they often act as disruptive innovations,
transforming the standard of care in the future.

There are also many related questions to be addressed – Which is best? What
are the obstacles to successful deployment? Are positive outcomes always
guaranteed? There are also many groups with similar humanitarian motivation
to address the unmet ocular health care needs of the underserved, yet the
sustainability of offered services remain a problem for many communities.

This conference will draw on expertise of both U.S. and international
scholars, students and clinicians, as well as representatives from
nonprofit organizations and industry, to provide a forum for not only
evaluating new technologies but create one conducive to developing
collaborative links and generating innovative models for delivering more
sustainable as well as affordable care. The program is structured to
facilitate discussion between academia, clinicians, and industry about
possible collaborative research ventures. A limited number of travel awards
will be available to presenters, junior investigators and trainee
clinicians.
