1 POSTDOCTORAL and 1 PhD POSITION IN MARTIN ROLFS' ACTIVE VISION AND COGNITION GROUP @ BCCN & HUMBOLDT UNIVERSITY, BERLIN, GERMANY
Starting date: November 2012 or later
A PhD and a Postdoctoral position are available to work in Martin Rolfs's new group at Humboldt University Berlin. The lab will be hosted by the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience (http://www.bccn-berlin.de/), an interdisciplinary research center focussing on computational and cognitive aspects of sensory neuroscience. The center is located in the heart of cosmopolitan Berlin, at the Humboldt University's Campus of Life Sciences (map).
The group's research focus will be on active vision and cognition, combining eye-head gaze tracking with visual psychophysics. A few recent publications by the group’s PI are listed below. The project will investigate the interactions of visual attention with large-scale eye and head movements. To this end, eye-movement recordings will be combined with body-motion tracking and gaze-contingent stimulus presentation. Where feasible, combinations with EEG, fMRI, and computational modeling are possible; both local and international collaborations, as well as the necessary infrastructure is in place. Successful candidates must have a strong, demonstrated interest in attention, action, and perception experiments. Training in vision research as well as eye and/or motion tracking is important as is programming ability in Matlab, Python, or C. More information about Martin Rolfs’ current and previous research can be found at http://www.martinrolfs.de.
Salary will be payed according to German standards (TV-L Berlin E-13 for the postdoc, i.e., typically between 1850 and 2400 Euros net, depending on experience, marital status etc.; 65% of that for the PhD). While Berlin has a very high quality of life, it is much cheaper than most other big cities. German language is not a requirement (many agree that life's too short to learn German) but I'll be happy to support all efforts. The initial appointment for the postdoctoral position is one year, renewable twice. The PhD position is a 3 year track.
Please send applications by email to martin.rolfs at bccn-berlin.de and include a CV, a brief statement of research interests, the expected date of availability and the names of 2 references as a single PDF file. Please indicate clearly which position you apply for (PhD or postdoc).
Applications should be sent preferably before October 1st, 2012, but later applications will be considered until the positions are filled.
I will also be at ECVP in Alghero, Italy, and would be happy to meet potential candidates in person. Feel free to send informal inquiries to my email address.
