I also have searched for years, and am often approached for the source. I've seen it first in Richard Gregory's book, where the source is given as "Photographer: RC James". My edition was from 1970, so it is later than your Life Magazine reference (thanks!). But I note that the typical Dalmation is wider than the the Life Mag picture -- the latter is cut off roughly at the top tree, the "standard one" which is also in my visual phenomena collection

extends markedly more to the left and right. So Richard probably had access to the original.
