Dear Michael and Rafael,
John Frisby's 1979 book "Seeing" uses the picture on page 20, and
credits it as follows:
Photograph by R.C. James taken from Thurston, J. and Carraher, R.G.
(1966) Optical illusions and the visual arts. Litton International.
That publication may get you closer to the original?
Best regards,
George

Subject: Re: [visionlist] Dalmatian Dog Picture
Dear Rafael:
> I would like to use in a publication the classic picture of the
Dalmatian dog hidden in a set of black spots. Does anyone know who
should I request permission to reproduce it?...
I also have searched for years, and am often approached for the source.
I've seen it first in Richard Gregory's book, where the source is given
as "Photographer: RC James". My edition was from 1970, so it is later
than your Life Magazine reference (thanks!). But I note that the typical
Dalmation is wider than the the Life Mag picture -- the latter is cut
off roughly at the top tree, the "standard one" which is also in my
visual phenomena collection http://michaelbach.de/ot/cog_dalmatian/
extends markedly more to the left and right. So Richard probably had
access to the original.
Sorry I can't help you with your real question.
Best, Michael
