The Visual Perception and Spatial Cognition Lab at the University of Utah http://www.cs.utah.edu/research/groups/percept/index.html is looking for a new PhD student in Psychology who would start in August 2013 as a graduate research assistant on a large collaborative NSF project, “Modeling, Display, and Understanding Uncertainty in Simulations for Policy Decision Making”
The goal of this collaborative project is to establish the computational and cognitive foundations for capturing and conveying the uncertainty associated with predictive simulations, so that software tools for visualizing these forecasts can accurately and effectively present this information about to a wide range of users. Scientific contributions are expected in the areas of simulation and uncertainty quantification, visualization, perception and cognition, and decision making in the presence of uncertainty. The multidisciplinary nature of the research and the close integration of the participating research groups will provide a unique educational environment for graduate students and other trainees.

We are seeking applicants to work on the “cognition of uncertainty” component of this project. Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or other related field and have a background and interests in perception, higher-level cognition, or decision making. Good quantitative skills and interest in working with an interdisciplinary group are required. Please email Dr. Sarah Creem-Regehr (sarah.creem at psych.utah.edu<mailto:sarah.creem at psych.utah.edu>) or Dr. William Thompson (Thompson at cs.utah.edu<mailto:Thompson at cs.utah.edu>) for more information. Applications for the University of Utah Psychology Graduate program are recommended by November 15, 2012, with a hard deadline of December 15, 2012 http://www.psych.utah.edu/graduate/apply.php .
