It's my pleasure to post the program for the 25th annual Conference on
Human Vision and Electronic
Imaging<http://spie.org/app/program/index.cfm?fuseaction=conferencedetail&export_id=&ID=x16223&redir=x16223.xml&conference_id=997516&event_id=996859&programtrack_id=1131>(HVEI),
which will be held February 4-7, 2013 at the San Francisco Airport
Hyatt Hotel in Burlingame, CA.
This conference is sponsored by two imaging societies, the SPIE and the
IS&T, and is dedicated to building a community dedicated to exploring *the
role of research in human vision, perception and cognition for emerging
technologies, art and design.* The scope of the conference is very broad,
encompassing research in low-level vision, color, attention, semantics,
problem solving, and aesthetics. The range of technologies includes
displays, image compression, digital libraries, visualization, haptics and
multisensory interfaces, brain imaging, art and design.
*
Come join us for peer-reviewed papers, interactive discussion sessions, a
banquet, a party, and colleagues from many disciplines all interested in
vision!*
This year's keynote speakers are:
- *Aude Oliva, *MIT, "Predicting Visual Memorability"
- *Jan Koenderink, *Delft, "World, environment, Umwelt and Innerworld: A
Biological Perspective on Visual Awareness"
- *Don Hoffman, *U.C. Irvine, "Does Evolution Favor True Perceptions?"
This year's banquet speaker is:
- *Walter Bender,* Sugar Labs,"Building Interactive, Intuitive
Interfaces for Children: How the Sugar Environment Drew Inspiration from
Research Presented at HVEI
Plus, there are special invited papers by:
- *Gerald Westheimer, *U.C., Berkeley,* *"Presenting Visual Stimuli,
Past and Present
- *Alan Gilchrist, *Rutgers, "Lightness Perception in Imaging and Art"
- *Michael Webster, *U. Nevada, "Adapting Environments to Observers"
And, in honor of our 25th anniversary, we will be presenting invited
"theme" talks that trace important trends at the interface between human
vision and electronic imaging, at HVEI and in the broader scientific
community, now and into the future.
- *John McCann, *McCann Imaging, "Spatial Imaging in Color and HDR:
Prometheus Unchained"
- *Hawley Rising*, Emerging Technologies: 25 Years"
- *Lora Likova, *Smith Kettlewell, "What Brain Imaging Technology can
tell us about Perception and Consciousness"
- *Bernice Rogowitz, *Visual Perspectives, "Perceptual Approaches to
Finding Features in Data"

Contrast Perception?"
- *Al Ahumada, *NASA Ames, "Visible Contrast Energy Metrics for
Detection and Discrimination"
- *Sheila Hamami, *Cornell University, "Image Quality: Coding"

Experience and 3D Quality Assessment"
- *Elena Federovskaya, Huib de Ridder, *T.U. Delft, "Subjective
Matters: From Image Quality to Image Psychology"
- *Thrasyvoulos Pappas, *Northwestern, "The Rough Side of Texture:
Texture Analysis Through the Lens of HVEI
- *Erhardt Barth, *U. Lubeck*, Michael Door, Eleanora Vig, *Harvard,
