Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences
PhD Studentship, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK.
Application Deadline: 29th November, 2012
Interview Date: 13th December 2012
Start Date: January, 2013

Our vibrant, modern University has ambitious plans for its future and is actively seeking to recruit more research students. The Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences within the Faculty of Science & Technology hosts quality researchers, research students, equipment and laboratories and also has an active University Eye Clinic.

Through University funding, we are seeking to recruit a new PhD scholar to join our Department in January 2013. We wish to attract an outstanding graduate in a science-related discipline (Physics, Computer Science, Experimental Psychology, Engineering, Optometry) to undertake a vision science doctoral research degree in understanding mechanisms of binocular vision.

The scholar will have been awarded a first, or upper second class honours degree, in a relevant undergraduate discipline from a UK or equivalent institution. The scholarship will provide tuition fees (UK and EU only) and a maintenance grant for the successful applicant.

Anglia Ruskin University provides high quality, structured research training and a stimulating research environment in which to work.

The Research Group: Anglia Vision Research

First Supervisor: Dr Monika A Formankiewicz, Second Supervisor: Dr Sarah J Waugh

The Project: Binocular summation, suppression and rivalry of 1st and 2nd order images.

Anglia Vision Research is a stimulating, coherent research group in Vision and Hearing Sciences. Consisting of academic staff with a wealth of international experience in research, research training and teaching in vision sciences, the group continues to be strengthened by a growing PhD student base. We have collaborative links with Addenbrooke’s hospital in paediatric eyecare and the University of Cambridge.
The project will use psychophysical and electrophysiological tools to investigate the characteristics of binocular summation, suppression and rivalry for stimuli designed to probe different levels of the visual system. The information provided will be valuable to the understanding of underlying visual processing mechanisms and may have implications for clinical conditions in which binocular vision is disturbed, e.g. amblyopia. The studentship will involve programming of experiments, empirical data collection and statistical analysis of quantitative data. Given the nature of the project, applicants with a special interest in programming in MatLab/ PsychToolBox and a desire to understand normal and anomalous binocular visual processing, will have an advantage.
For details of this project prior to application please contact Dr Monika Formankiewicz directly (monika.formankiewicz at anglia.ac.uk<mailto:sarah.waugh at anglia.ac.uk>).
