PhD researcher ‘A temporal perspective on perceptual binding’ (1.0 fte)

Job description
The proposed research project deals with perceptual binding: the process that allows human observers to perceive integrated objects instead of the individual features that make up the object. We will approach this problem from a cognitive neuroscience perspective where we combine psychophysical experiments with EEG recording. The goal of the project is to infer the temporal characteristics of perceptual binding.

You will design and conduct experiments and will report the results in articles that are published in relevant scientific journals. The project will lead to a PhD thesis. You will participate in the Cognition & Behaviour program of the Utrecht Graduate School of Life Sciences. The project is a collaboration with the group of professor Frans Verstraten at The University of Sydney. You are likely to spend some time in his lab as well.

Qualifications
You should have a MSc degree and a strong background in psychology, (cognitive) neuroscience or related relevant disciplines. Enthusiasm for scientific research and excellent communication skills are essential, as is experience with psychophysical experimentation. Knowledge about EEG recording is an asset. Existing programming skills (e.g., Matlab, C) and an affinity towards quantitative methods are desirable or must be acquired during the PhD work.

Offer
We offer an initial appointment for one year. After a positive evaluation the appointment will be extended to a total of four years maximum. The gross salary starts with € 2,042 per month in the first year and increases to € 2,612 per month in the fourth year of employment. The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday pay of 8% and an end-of-year pay of 8,3% per year. Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions.
More information: terms of employment.

About the organisation
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences carries out relevant scientific research of a very high quality and provides challenging academic teaching in the fields of human behaviour and society. The faculty’s research and teaching contributes to a critical reflection on society, human behaviour and their interconnection. More than 5,600 students follow a broad range of undergraduate and graduate (academic and research) programmes, set up by a collaboration of two departments: Behavioural Sciences and Social Sciences. As a result of the faculty’s wide variety of programmes and innovative and groundbreaking research, some 850 staff members have ample opportunity to benefit from each other’s knowledge and expertise.
