How can an image be ‘unsafe’? Quite easily, as it turns out.  Flashing lights can produce photo-epileptic fits, moving images can produce symptoms like those of motion sickness, people have complained of eyestrain and headaches after viewing 3D stereoscopic images and, historically, when VDUs were first introduced there were numerous problems reported.

Background.
On 7-8 December 2004, an ISO Workshop on Image Safety was organized in Tokyo, Japan by Dr. Hiroyasu Ujike. The International Workshop Agreement resulting from this meeting recognized that visually induced motion sickness, visual fatigue, and photosensitive seizures are major biomedical concerns, and ISO are currently drafting standards in these areas.  In October 2006, during a CIE meeting in Paris on image safety, it was suggested that a regular symposium on visual image safety should be held.  Accordingly, the 1st symposium (VIMS2007<http://www.ielm.ust.hk/dfaculty/so/vims2007/>) was organized 10-11 December 2007 in Hong Kong by Dr. Richard So from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Building on the success of this symposium, a 2nd symposium (VIMS2009<http://www.vims2009.org/>) was organized by Dr. Jelte Bos in the Netherlands, and Dr. Eric Muth organised a third (VIMS2011<https://email.lboro.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?C=7hAMKYmUhUmk6OmsI5l0N1xwFl-FhM8IFJBHwVwms5RrgMpdxqoMKIkYzquGnsGl06Yh3_xdKdM.&URL=http%3a%2f%2fielm.ust.hk%2fdfaculty%2fso%2fvims2011%2f>) in Las Vegas.

VIMS2013
The next meeting will be held in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, starting on September 3rd 2013.  The venue is the Welcombe <http://www.menzieshotels.co.uk/hotels/midlands/stratford-upon-avon-welcombe-hotel-spa-and-golf-club/> Hotel & Golf Club, which is easily accessible from both Heathrow and Birmingham International airport.  It will be organised by Dr. Peter Howarth<http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/lds/staff/dr-peter-howarth.html>, from Loughborough University and Dr. Cyriel Diels from Coventry University. Deadline for submission of abstracts will be June 3rd 2013
