The Department of Optometry and Visual Science at Buskerud University College in Kongsberg, Norway has a vacancy for a 4-year PhD research fellowship within the Colour Vision and Retinal Imaging Lab (cvri.hibu.no) with Professor Rigmor Baraas. Buskerud University College has newly established a National Centre for Vision Health Research and the PhD candidate will be associated with the Centre.
The department is seeking a candidate with a master degree in optometry or neuroscience and strong background in vision science for research on one of the following projects:
(1) Examine the association between myopia and color vision, especially the importance of the different types of cones on the retina, the prevailing daylight and its relation to ocular axial length. This knowledge will improve our understanding of the prevalence of myopia in Norway as well as the relationship between genetics and environmental factors in myopia.
or
(2) Examine the relationship between photoreceptor mosaic and parafoveal visual function, particularly the relationship between rods and cones and its correlation with senescent changes on parafoveal sensitivity to detail and motion. This knowledge will give us a better understanding of the significance of changes in the photoreceptor mosaic with aging and its impact on vision.
The successful applicant will be expected to work and collect data with the Kongsberg adaptive optics ophthalmoscope and OCT for retinal imaging as well as commercial and custom-made software for visual psychophysics. Experience with retinal imaging and/or psychophysics is therefore an advantage, but not required.
