It is with great sadness to announce the death of Professor Alan Cowey MA, PhD, Hon DSc, FMedSci, FRS. Alan died on 19th December, just three months after being diagnosed with cancer. Alan was an undergraduate and postgraduate student in Cambridge but turned down a secure and tenured University post there in 1967 in order to join Professor Larry Weiskrantz and help set up a new laboratory for studying primate behaviour in Oxford. He stayed on in Oxford as a member of the Department of Experimental Psychology and a Fellow of Lincoln College for the rest of his life. His reputation as a dedicated, original and outstanding scientist was thoroughly deserved and acknowledged in his election to a Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1988. A marvellous autobiography of Alan’s life and career can be found at:

He will be greatly missed.
