The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Science, Queen's University Belfast, invites applications for the following  3-year funded PhD studentship:
The utility of ultra-wide field retinal imaging for assessing aging biomarkers in the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Aging Study (NICOLA).<http://www.findaphd.com/search/ProjectDetails.aspx?PJID=42041&LID=115>
The Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Aging (NICOLA) is a large (n=8500) population based epidemiological study collecting a wide range of data, including demographic, medical, social and lifestyle information. It also includes a study visit involving cardiovascular system evaluation, ophthalmic imaging, hearing tests and cognitive testing. Ultra-wide field retinal imaging will be undertaken and this will provide novel data on the prevalence of peripheral retinal lesions in a population based sample. A grading scheme for this purpose will be designed using the NICOLA pilot study data and validated and used within the main study as part of the studentship. Data from the graded images will be used to investigate the relationship between retinal pathology, particularly in the periphery and cognitive decline. Previous studies have suggested that retinal deposits and microvascular changes may be related to cognitive decline and Alzheimer's Disease. The significance of peripheral lesions has not been investigated. The large amount of data collected within the NICOLA study will enable associations to be sought while controlling for potential confounding factors. The identification of early biomarkers would be useful for the purposes of early diagnosis and disease monitoring.

This studentship can be tailored towards the development of computer assisted image analysis or investigating clinical/epidemiological applications depending on the strengths and interests of the candidate.

Eligibility for both fees and maintenance (£13,590 in 2012/13 - 2013/14 TBC) depends on the applicants being either an ordinary UK resident or those EU residents who have lived permanently in the UK for the 3 years immediately preceding the start of the studentship.

Non UK residents who hold EU residency may also apply but if successful may receive fees only.
