"Strange visions - the contribution of inner retinal photoreceptors to sensation"
Abstract: The assumption that all aspects of mammalian vision
originate with rod/cone photoreception has been overturned in the last
decade with the discovery that a small number of neurons in the inner
retina are also photoreceptive. In this seminar I will provide an
overview of the physiology and anatomy of this newly discovered
photoreceptor system, before turning to our more recent attempts using
behavioural and electrophysiological experiments in mice to understand
its function. What does it do that rods and cones can not? What
aspects of vision rely upon it?
All welcome to attend.
