Two Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Visual Perception of Natural Scenes.

Location: Highfield Campus, University of Southampton (UK)
Salary: £27,854 to £30,424
Full Time, Fixed Term
Closing Date: March 3rd 2013

Two postdoctoral research posts are available, funded by EPSRC grant EP/K005952/1, to work with Wendy Adams and Erich Graf (Psychology, University of Southampton, UK), James Elder (Computer Science & Engineering, Psychology, York University, Canada) and Julian Leyland (Geography, Southampton, UK). The aims of the project are to develop a database of 3D natural scenes with registered and calibrated stereoscopic colour imagery using a laser range-finder and high dynamic range cameras, analyse the statistical structure of natural scenes and relate this to human perception.

Post 1: Image / Scene analysis & modelling. (Vacancy reference: 200513JW)
Duration: Fixed term for 33 months.
Working primarily with Wendy Adams & James Elder, with the initial task to generate a database of natural images and scenes, you will take the lead in the joint statistical analysis of 3D range and calibrated colour imagery, providing data to support psychophysical research and computer vision algorithm development.
You will have a PhD in computer or human vision, with strong computational skills, significant experience with programming (e.g. Matlab, C, C++) and experience of visual psychophysics.
You must be available to travel within the UK and Canada for the purpose of collating the database, and collaboration.

Post 2: Human visual psychophysics & modelling. (Vacancy reference: 200313JW)
Duration: Fixed term for 30 months.
Working with members of the team to develop models of psychophysical data, you will take the lead in designing and conducting psychophysical experiments to understand human visual perception in the context of natural scene statistics.
You will have a PhD in human vision, with strong computational skills, experience with programming (e.g. Matlab, C, C++) and a knowledge of image analyses.
You must be available to travel within the UK and Canada for the purpose of collating the database, and collaboration.

Psychology at Southampton encompasses a large and diverse group of excellent researchers, and was ranked 8th in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. Whilst Psychology is ambitious and successful, it is also a very friendly and pleasant place to work. You will join a highly motivated and professional team with many opportunities for professional development. Further details about Psychology at Southampton can be obtained from our webpages at www.psychology.soton.ac.uk<http://www.psychology.soton.ac.uk/>.

For further details you are warmly invited to contact Wendy Adams (w.adams at soton.ac.uk).
The closing date for applications is 3 March 2013 and interviews are scheduled for 15 March 2013. Please apply online via www.jobs.soton.ac.uk<http://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk/> or phone 023 8059 2750 for an application form. Please quote the job reference number above on all correspondence.
